About the House
A publisher built like a bridge
POL International Ltd exists to carry writing across languages, cultures and literary traditions — and to make that crossing a welcoming one.
§1Who We Are
Stories across languages; ideas across borders.
POL International Ltd is an independent publishing company registered in England and Wales. We publish literary fiction, poetry, non-fiction and scholarship; we translate — above all between Bengali and English; and we support research and cultural exchange that help literatures meet one another.
Our name carries a simple conviction: that a book should be able to travel further than its first language. We work with authors writing in English, with translators bringing other literatures into English, and with partners abroad who share our belief in the international life of books.
The house is young and its catalogue is built deliberately. We would rather publish a small number of books well than many books carelessly — a conviction reflected in the care given to every title we carry.
The book arts — stitching, paper and print — shape how we think about publishing
§2What Guides Us
Four commitments
International by instinct
We publish for readers everywhere and welcome authors and translators from every country, language and literary tradition.
Distinctive strengths, honestly held
Bengali literature, Bengali-to-English translation and the Bengali diaspora are particular strengths — specialisms, not boundaries.
Craft in the making
We care for the book as an object: careful editing, thoughtful typography, durable design and respectful production.
Exchange over gatekeeping
Publishing is a conversation. We favour openness, fair dealing and long relationships with writers, translators and readers.
